Fujifilm X-S20 entry-level model with 6K and better battery announced

The Fujifilm X-S20 was announced at the X-Summit 2023 in Bangkok, where the new XF 8mm f/3.5 was announced as well. The camera, which is suitable for beginners, brings 6K film, image stabilization and the latest image processor. It is a perfect camera for both photographers and filmmakers.

The X-S20 succeeds the Fujifilm X-S10 and, as a mid-range camera, is suitable for passionate and ambitious photographers and especially filmmakers. If you look at the design of the X-S10 and X-S20, they are quite similar. Inside, they both have an X-Trans CMOS 26.1-megapixel APS-C sensor, with in-body stabilization and phase-detection autofocus. However, if you dig further, you will see the differences emerge.

Film and Processor

The X-S20 uses the latest generation of sensors and this includes the X-Processor 5 and with it the ability to capture 6.2K ‘open gate’ (uncropped) RAW video. On the X-S10 it is possible to shoot up to 4K 30fps images. Other resolutions include 4K 60fps, 2K 60fps and Full HD up to 120fps.

Double battery life and AI support

A major upgrade is the battery, which now lasts up to twice as long as that of its predecessor. Even though the battery has become larger, the camera still weighs only 491 grams.

The autofocus has been upgraded by integrating AI support. This way, different subjects are better recognized and that helps the autofocus. The recognized subjects are tracked better so that the focus remains on the right subject. Obviously, this is useful for vloggers.

Fast and smooth display

On the back of the Fujifilm X-S20 is a vari-angle screen that can be tilted completely. The touchscreen responds quickly and helps you easily scroll through settings and captured images.

Improved stabilization

While the X-S10 and X-S20 have image stabilization incorporated into the boy, that of the Fujifilm X-S20 is now slightly better. Both stabilizers work on 5 axes, but only the X-S20’s stabilizer compensates up to 7 stops. Which is one stop more than the previous version.

Specifications are getting better, but the price is also higher

All those upgrades are nice and useful, but the starting price has also gone up. Where the X-S10 was still $999, the X-S20 is $1,299.95. That’s a huge difference that puts the camera well into the mid-range prices. A beginner will not want to spend an amount like this quickly, especially if you add a few hundred euros for a standard lens. And while the price seems fair for the features you get, the jump from the X-S10 to the X-S20 is rather steep. But, who knows, the X-S20 may be good news for users who actually wanted to buy the Fujifilm X-T5, which is only slightly pricier.
