Panasonic Lumix GH6 review

The Panasonic Lumix GH6 succeeds the Lumix GH5 II and comes with many improvements. With the Lumix GH6, you get a new 25-megapixel Micro FourThirds Live MOS sensor and a new Venus Engine image processor. You film in a maximum of 5.8K 10-bit anamorphic, 5.7K 60fps and 4K 120fps Pro Res.

Features Panasonic Lumix GH6

  • Micro FourThirds 25MP Live Mos sensor
  • Revamped Venus Engine
  • 4K 120fps
  • 5.8K anamorphic 10-bit
  • 5.7K 60fps 10bit 442
  • FHD up to 300fps
  • 7.5 stops of 5-axis image stabilization
  • 4 channel audio recordings
  • Active cooling system
  • No withdrawal limit
  • Photos up to 100 megapixels
  • 13+ stops of dynamic range

New possibilities

The Lumix GH6 contains a new Stacked Back Side Illuminated sensor, which captures light better and uses the light more efficiently. Together with the renewed Venus Engine, this ensures that you can film in 5.8K anamorphic or 5.7K widescreen at 60 frames per second. In addition, it is now possible to capture 4K 120fps images for beautiful, high-quality slow motions.

The new technology makes the processing speed almost twice as fast as that of its predecessor and also ensures that you capture up to 75 photos per second with the electronic shutter.

No overheating and withdrawal limit

The active cooling system behind the LCD screen makes sure that the camera does not overheat. Where other cameras have had the problem of overheating at 4K 120fps or resolutions greater than 4K, the GH6 doesn’t. Now, you can film without a time limit. Everything now depends on the storage capacity of the memory card.

Shooting in ProRes 442 HQ

Images in 5.7K 30fps 4:2:0 are recorded in ProRes 422 HQ. It is also possible to capture C4K 60fps 4:2:2 10-bit and broadcast directly via HDMI.

Super slow motion at 300 frames per second

The previous models reached a maximum of 240fps, but now you can make great slow motions of 300fps in Full HD. For the highest quality slow motion, set the camera to Full HD 240fps 4:2:2 10-bit.

Always stable images thanks to 7.5 stops

Shooting with slow shutter speeds and filming handheld becomes a lot easier. The GH6 has a 5-axis in-body stabilization that stabilizes up to 7.5 stops. The camera detects the type of movement you make and applies the correct stabilization. The advantage of 7.5 stops of stabilization is that you don’t necessarily need lenses with I.O.S. or stabilization.

Take photos up to 100 megapixels

You would think that 25 megapixels is a bit disappointing for photography, but the Lumix GH6 has a high-resolution mode. The camera can combine 8 images into a large photo of 100 megapixels. The image stabilization ensures that movements are prevented, and the images are razor-sharp. It’s always a good idea to take these super resolution shots from a tripod and aim them at objects that aren’t moving. You take the 100MP photos in RAW and JPEG.

Wide dynamic range of 13+ stops

The dynamic range indicates how much information from highlights and shadows can store per image. With the Lumix GH6, you have a dynamic range of 12+ stops in V-Log mode and even 13+ stops with the Dynamic Range Boost function.

Standard V-Log and V-Gammut

For the greatest dynamic range in film, use the V-log/V-gammut mode. This mode gives you extra latitude in the color editing and ensures that you can bring the colors back to how they were in reality. The V-log profile gives a flat and fairly colorless image, but thanks to the V-Log View Assist you record in V-log, while you see real-time colors. This makes it easier to set exposure.

Record audio on 4 channels

You need the optional XLR adapter for this function. It is then possible to record 4-XLR audio channels in 48kHz or 96kHz 24-bit. This ensures that you can work flexibly and professionally. With the built-in stereo microphone you record 2 channels in 96Khz 24 bit.

A 3-inch vari-angle and tilt LCD screen

We are used to the GH Series having a vari-angle LCD touch screen. But now it is possible to tilt the screen (up/down) without having to unfold the screen. It is possible to zoom in on the 3″ screen up to 6x to determine the correct focus.

Made for professional applications

The camera has two card slots that you can put different types of cards in. For example, it is possible to use the CFexpress Type B and SD UHS II cards. There is also a USB 3.2 Gen 2 connection. Thanks to the Timecode In/Out you can use the camera in multi-camera projects and that makes it a real professional model.
