Will the Canon EOS R5 Mark II get 60MP and 8K 180fps?

The question is; how can the Canon EOS R5 Mark II improve compared to its predecessor, the EOS R5. As well as overheating fixes, the EOS R5 Mark II looks set to get a 60-megapixel sensor and even 8K 60fps internal video recording. So, the competition with Sony is getting a lot bigger!

The rumor of the successor to the Canon EOS R5 comes via The Camera Insider, who in turn has picked up reports from the industry. A sensor of 60MP from 45MP is, of course, always welcome, but probably not necessary. The current 45MP sensor already captures so much detail, that more megapixels might be overkill.

Catching up with Sony

However, Canon nowadays seems to be in a phase where they like to show what is technically possible. And let’s face it, many of the super resolutions most users don’t need at all. But the more and bigger is important to stay ahead of the competition.

Filming in 8K 60 or 180fps?

The same source indicates that filming 8K 60fps material will also be possible. It is not clear whether this will be possible internally, RAW or via HDMI. There are even rumors (Via Canon Rumors) of 8K 180fps being tested, but it’s not clear if this is for the EOS R5 Mark II or an EOS Cinema camera. In addition, a crop could be applied to a resolution and frame rate like this.

Hi-res film without overheating?

While Canon is working hard to reduce camera overheating at 4K and 8K resolutions, it’s not clear whether the R5II will have a built-in fan. Currently, the Canon EOS R5C is built with a fan and the EOS R5 Mark II would be too big if it also got a built-in fan.

New autofocus technique

Canon has applied for a patent for a new linear focus motor that can be placed in new RF lenses. In addition, Canon is working on a new generation of AI autofocus for their cameras. We think autofocus will see a lot of change. Who knows, not immediately during the launch of the EOS R5 Mark II, but probably through firmware updates. Anyway, with the camera hardware to handle the software.

When will the Canon EOS R5 Mark II be released?

The Canon EOS R5 Mark II is expected around the first half of 2024. It will start with an announcement, pre-orders, and then when the camera will be available to use.
