Stacked BSI Sensor for High Megapixel Photos

The sensor in the Nikon Z8 features 47.5 megapixels on a Back Side Illuminated Stacked sensor design. This makes the camera ideal for photography where high megapixels are desired. The large sensor and powerful image processor result in clear photos with minimal noise and incredible detail. Thanks to the stacked sensor design, rolling shutter is reduced, which is important for sports photography and fast-motion video. ISO can be set from 32 to 102400 without significant noise.

Fast Image Processor

For handling burst photos, noise-free photos, and large video resolutions, Nikon has equipped the Z8 with the Expeed 7 image processor. This processor is nearly 10 times faster than the one in the Nikon Z7 II, designed to process video and photos quickly. With this setup, you can buffer up to 1000 photos taken in a burst, allowing you to capture photos for up to 50 seconds before the buffer fills. Additionally, the Nikon Z8 has a maximum burst speed of 120 photos per second.

High-Speed Burst Shots

In addition to the maximum burst rate of 120fps, you can capture 20 RAW, 30fps JPEG, and 60FPS 19MP shots. To achieve the 120fps speed, photos are taken at 11 megapixels. While this may seem like a significant drop in megapixels, it helps save space on your memory card and hard drives.

Pre-Release Capture

The Pre-Release capture feature records up to one second of footage before you press the shutter button, ensuring you never miss important moments. Of course, the camera needs to be properly set up for this feature to work, and it operates by half-pressing the shutter button.

No Mechanical Shutter

The Nikon Z8 has eliminated the mechanical shutter and now features only an electronic shutter. This makes the camera quieter and allows for higher burst speeds. The maximum shutter speed is 1/32000, reducing or eliminating distortion in fast-moving subjects. Flash synchronization up to 1/200 is supported, nearly matching the shutter press.

Precise Image Control

You can adjust the image settings in the camera before you start shooting, including adjusting tones and brightness, as well as Soft Skin and textures for portrait photography. This comes in handy when you’re under time pressure to deliver your photos. The Z8’s smart technology ensures that only the skin is softened while maintaining sharpness around the eyes.

AI-Assisted Autofocus

With 493 autofocus points and phase detection, the Nikon Z8 has ample focus points for precise focusing. The entire sensor is utilized for quick focusing. Thanks to AI assistance, subjects and objects are recognized and tracked rapidly, even when they momentarily leave the frame. Autofocus measurements are taken at up to 120 frames per second.

Subject Tracking and Deep Learning

Of course, the Nikon Z8 full-frame mirrorless camera recognizes eyes and faces with technology inherited from the Nikon Z9. Thanks to Deep Learning (AI) technology, subjects like animals, humans, aircraft, cars, and bicycles are also recognized and tracked.

Video Capabilities of the Nikon Z8

The camera is positioned as a hybrid model, and its professional video capabilities reflect that. You can shoot in 8K at 30fps with full pixel readout and record continuously for up to 2 hours and 5 minutes. For slow-motion shots, switch to 4K at 120 frames per second.

Raw, ProRes Raw, and 12-bit Video Recording

For the highest quality video, you can capture 12-bit RAW 8.3K video at 60fps, which is saved in N-RAW format. ProRes RAW HQ is also supported. With these settings, you get footage with maximum image information in shadows, highlights, and the widest dynamic range. The flat N-LOG format is suitable for color correction in post-production. N-RAW is available at 8.3K 60 and 24fps, 4K1 at up to 120fps, 5.3K at up to 60fps with a 1.5x crop, and 3.8K at up to 120fps with a 2.3x crop.

H.265, ProRes 10-bit

The H.265 file format is designed for 10-bit video recording without creating enormous files. The Z8 offers multiple format options:

  • 10-bit 4:2:2 ProRes 422 HQ
  • H.265 / H.264 4:2:0

4-Axis Tilting LCD Screen

The 3.2-inch touchscreen LCD has 2.1-dot pixels and tilts on 4 axes, making it easy to work from any angle in both horizontal and vertical modes. When you tilt the screen and camera, the menu interface also tilts, ensuring you won’t strain your neck while reading the screen.

Short Nikon Z8 review
We give the Nikon Z8 a very high rating because it offers the power of the Nikon Z9 but in a much smaller form factor. The Z9 features a larger integrated grip and additional battery capacity, but not everyone requires those features. Additionally, the Nikon Z8 is considerably more affordable without compromising on quality. The Z8 utilizes the same CMOS Stacked 45MP sensor and Expeed 7 processor as the Nikon Z9. You can think of the Z8 as the mirrorless camera version of the Nikon D850 DSLR, which has been and continues to be a highly popular camera.
PROS
  • Same features as Nikon Z9
  • Good handling and grip
  • Costs less than the Z9
CONS
  • Has less battery capacity
  • Doesn't have the Z9 high-tech features
  • Still a great investment
